The C'ELAN Foundation believes, and scientific research continues to confirm, that the scientific evidence for Anthropogenic Climate Change (Human Caused Climate Change) is clearly beyond question. Anthropogenic Climate Change is growing toward catastrophic proportions due to political inaction, corporate cover-up tactics, and our current economic system based on fossil fuels, consumerism, and population growth.
To avert Climate Disaster, every individual must re-evaluate their present lifestyle and take immediate action to initiate changes that will allow the Natural Systems of Earth to help us avoid Climate Catastrophe. Further, a case can be made that all other species have a right to exist, and humans could be considered an "invasive species" in most environments. To mitigate the consequences of our actions, humans, especially those in developed nations, have an obligation to protect surviving Wilderness and wild species, as well as re-invent our lifestyles based on the realization of our vital connection to Nature.
At TCF, we believe that one of the Best Methods available to avoid Climate Catastrophe is to permanently protect existing Wilderness, and create or reinstate Wilderness in areas that have been "Landscalped" by human activities. Wilderness is a natural sequester of carbon from the atmosphere, while also encouraging biodiversity.
That Nature is in sharp decline globally from these types of activities was made clear in the first-ever Global Assessment of Biodiversity released earlier this year. Human activity has resulted in the severe alteration of more than 75 percent of Earth’s land areas and 66 percent of the oceans, putting a million species at risk of extinction, according to the Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.
